Red-Shirted!

We're just emerging (I hope) from a three-week period in which Will requested to wear "red-only shirts." It seems that our toy kitchen is Chuck E. Cheese's, and the larger toys in his room represent arcade games. And apparently, all Chuck E. Cheese employees wear red shirts. Solid red shirts. I've had to make several accomodations for this phase:

1) Finding a couple of new "red-only shirts" at a consignment sale
2) Allowing Will to wear a dressy red sweater vest when all his red-only shirts were dirty (Emily commented he must have been promoted to management!)
3) Even turning red shirts with designs on them wrong side out so they will meet his red-only requirement.

I am optimistic this phase has passed, and hopefully some of his other clothes will get some wear again.

P.S. Immediately after posting this, I took Will to our room to help him get dressed. He requested red-only again. {sigh}

Mom: I don't think this red-only thing is a good idea. You aren't getting to wear any of your other nice clothes.

Will: Just put them in a consignment sale. I don't need them.

{sigh}

So Unusual

Will and I were talking before bed, after having "movie time" with popcorn, which he doesn't care for.

Will: Mom, is popcorn really made from corn?

Mom: Yep.

Will: Hmmm... so something I don't like comes from something I like. That's unusual!

Family Planning

Sophie is a very nurturing two-year-old. She is always playing "Baby" with her bears and other stuffed animals, wrapping them in blankets and putting diapers on them.

After spending a weekend with our friends (http://www.thecareyclan.blogspot.com/) and their phenomenally happy nine-month old, I decided the broach the subject of a new baby with Sophie.

(LET ME STATE FOR THE RECORD THAT WE ARE NOT EXPECTING AND HAVE NO IMMEDIATE PLANS TO INCREASE THE SIZE OF OUR FAMILY. I just thought Sophie would enjoy thinking about the possibilities for a minute. I've asked Will a few times and always gotten a positive response.)

Mom: Sophie, what would you think if we had a baby at our house? Would you like that?

Sophie: No!

Mom: Really? Why not?

Sophie: I don't like babies.

Mom: But what about Liam? You like Liam, don't you? Isn't he nice?

Sophie: Yes. But I don't like babies.

Then, yesterday Andy and I were oohing and aahing over our friends Jose and Carmen's three-month-old, who we were meeting for the first time. Jonathan is a very cute baby. But thankfully, Jose and particularly Carmen are not especially fluent in English and hopefully are not readers of this blog.

Mom: Sophie, look at little Jonathan. Isn't he so cute?

Sophie: No. No, he's not.

Mom (loudly): I know, I know... he is SO CUTE!

Moral: NEVER ask a two-year-old a rhetorical question.

Maybe You Had To Be There...

This morning, when I walked by Sophie's room to the laundry room, I noticed she was just starting to stir in bed. So when I walked back by about three minutes later, I looked in on her.

By this time, she was standing beside her bed, had removed her pajamas (no small feat since they are the fleece one-piece style with feet) and was just pulling off her Pull-up.

I stood there for a moment undetected to see what she was going to do next.

She abruptly caught sight of me from the corner of her eye.

Sophie (buck naked): Mama! You TOTALLY scared me!

Don't Turn Me In

I had to laugh when I read this post from Molly, because I had this picture waiting in the wings as further evidence that we bloggers are crazy mamas. Yes, I looked over from the kitchen to see my daughter on the 11th stair on the OUTSIDE of the rail, grinning down at me with pride at her accomplishment. And as I was yelling at her to "get down right this instant... but be careful!", I of course had to grab my camera from the bar and snap a picture. By this time, she was two steps down and seeming pretty stable. (And after all, there's a couch there to break her fall, right?)

Nevertheless, this picture still gives me the heebeejeebees, and I bet it will you too!

Snow Face

I'm not sure where they got the idea, but Andy and Will reinterpreted the "snowman" concept while we were on vacation, sculpting a truly impressive snow portrait. I can't wait to see the sand castles they build this summer!

Also note in the lower picture that Will's shoes, as usual, are on the wrong feet.

(I'll be done with six-week-old vacation pics soon, I promise. Somehow, my blog tends toward smaller posts and long lags...)

Our Snow Angel

Will and Sophie are fascinated by snow angels, I think partially a result of watching "Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas" about 5,000,001 times. They try to make snow angels everywhere - in the grass, on department store carpet, in the middle of our living room.

They got to make REAL snow angels in Breckenridge...
